Holiday Play Schemes

The (Newcastle &) North Staffs Play Council provides a Holiday Play scheme service for the young people in the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire Moorlands, and throughout other geographical areas of North Staffordshire in the age range 4 - 16 years, including young people with ‘special needs’. Traditional play schemes operate for just under four hours per day, whilst full day care schemes are offered to support working parents

What does a holiday play scheme offer to young people

• Children are given the opportunity to take part in leisure and recreational activities in an informal and child centered environment. There is a very liberal approach to play and games and the children having fun.
• Play needs are at a peak at holiday times, yet there are seldom enough things to do.
  Play is too important to children's growth, health, and happiness to be left to chance.
• Boredom, frustration and stress are damaging and dangerous to children. Play schemes extend education and give opportunities to practice skills.

• An opportunity is given to adults to gain experience in working with groups of youngsters, particularly students interested in making a career in nursing, teaching etc.
• Children are kept busy and happy with the community benefiting by the fact that pressure is taken off families at work and there is a reduction in vandalism and accidents in the home and the road.
• The play council training programme provides an educational service covering all aspects of work with young people by keeping with Ofsted regulations and the 'Every Child Matters Framework Outcome'.
